I thought it might be interesting to explain how I designed this painting. I have superimposed a red line diagram over the table area to let you see how I have used the Golden Ratio, the Fibonacci number sequence and the Golden Spiral. The table top rectangle is in the proportion of the Golden Ratio. This is closely related to the Fibonacci number sequence from which a spiral can be drawn. It is a spiral that can be found repeatedly in nature including the fossils depicted here. I have placed a fossil at the centre of the spiral and another at the centre of the spiral when it is turned 180 degrees.
As a child I used to collect fossils from beneath the cliffs where I grew up and slowly built a collection. The sandy colour of the table top may also suggest a beach whilst the surrounding tiled floor can stand in for the sea, the whole evoking thoughts about time and memory, both human and the natural world.
